What Is the Form for Massachusetts Extension Payment?

What Is the Form for Massachusetts Extension Payment?

Massachusetts does not have a single extension payment form for everyone. The necessary form varies entirely with the specific tax return:

  • Individual income tax filers — Form M-4868

  • Fiduciaries, partnerships, and corporate trusts — Form M-8736

  • Corporate excise taxpayers — generally Form 355-7004 but certain specialized excise filers must use Form 355-7004 Misc

Which Massachusetts extension form applies to your filer type?

Filer type Extension payment form
Individual income tax filer Form M-4868
Fiduciary, partnership, or corporate trust Form M-8736
Corporate excise taxpayer Form 355-7004; some specialized filers use Form 355-7004 Misc.

The correct form is important as the state processes extensions by filer category. Missing the payment deadline or failing the required payment threshold can void the extension, so the filer should use the form that matches the return type and pay on time.

Do you always need to mail a paper form?

No — taxpayers might submit their extension payments electronically via MassTaxConnect. Massachusetts allows many extension payments to be made through MassTaxConnect instead of mailing a voucher, although some filers are required to pay electronically once they meet the state’s e-payment thresholds.

The paper voucher is only necessary in the case of choosing to mail a physical check. The main requirement is paying the correct amount by the original due date — regardless of the method chosen to send it.

What payment rule goes with the form?

For personal income, fiduciary, and partnership returns, the state grants an automatic 6-month extension as long as at least 80% of the total tax liability is paid by the original deadline.

Corporate excise filers have a distinct requirement. They must pay the greater of 50% of the total anticipated tax or the minimum corporate excise tax by the due date.
